Here I am in Half Moon Pose, unsupported variation with Hammerhead arms. Foot pointed side-ways, as in Half Moon Pose, hands behind the head in squeezed Goddess arms variation, slowly lean sideways aiming for a horizontal body position, as in Half Moon. Sideways balances, most commonly practised in Triangle Pose, add a further dimension to our balance training, particularly noticeable in the inner ear. Balance is one of the ways in which we attempt to gain some control of our life in a chaotic and complicated world. The world outside is constantly flowing in from opposite directions, and by balancing opposites in our body and mind we find a constancy in what is between all things. Fascinatingly, listening to a program on Quantum physics, one of the definitions of the quantum world is that which exists where opposites meet, between things. Whilst scientists think this is provably true but counter-intuitive, for mystics and contemplatives, it’s exactly what all great spiritual traditions have always taught. Whilst life sways one way and then the other, by blending opposites within us, and finding balances, we feel an inner buoyancy, a flow feeling, that transcends and/or illuminates the outer world. As we go through life and things change, we begin to realise that the real power in our life is in ourselves. How we treat life becomes far more important than how life treats us. Whilst the outer world comes and goes, the inner life can grow and grow, and whilst the outer dimension can seem to make no sense, our inner story and myth can make sense of it. The deeper we go within, into the light that sees rather than the light that is seen, our inner guide turns everything and everyone into an outer guru, as life begins to speak to us. New Year's resolutions are really about putting those deep dream pulses, coming from within and without, into practice. Happy New Year everyone!
