Back Massage Techniques

If you've​ not had a massage before, here is an example of the kind of techniques and process that Stephen will follow, when massaging your back. Effleurage means flowy movements, to move and warm-up the muscles. Stephen will constantly check with you to adjust pressures and movements according to your preference. 

  1. Effleurage. Into waist, rib cage, and shoulders

  2. Alternate double handed kneading

  3. Ironing with both hands from the side

  4. Figure of eight ironing, kneading

  5. Picking up the back

  6. Wringing the shoulders

  7. Skin rolling bringing hands together

  8. Warming slides in quick succession

  9. Finger kneading around the scapula and up and down the spine

  10. Shaking/rocking the body and spine

  11. Vibrations up the spine

  12. Spinal lengthening/opening stretches/slides

  13. Effleurage down the body from the head

  14. Kneading the neck

  15. Alternate neck strokes with two hands

  16. Lymphatic drainage up the spine

  17. Finger spirals away from the spine

  18. Multiple finger rotates either side of spine

  19. Neuro-muscular points knuckling up and down spine and around shoulder blades

  20. Hacking

  21. Pummelling

  22. Cupping

  23. Light strokes/feathering

  24. Palm of hand either side of spine pressures(possible with towel)

  25. Gentle patting. (baby pat with towel)
